Chiasmus of the Month
February 2015

Now that we’ve settled into the new year, things are humming along swimmingly.* I am happy to report that this month’s cover features Teena Rochfort-Smith, as promised last time.

There is good news, and bad newsand it’s the same news. The inclusion of Kober and Rochfort-Smith on the first two covers of the new year triples the total number of female linguisticians and philologizers who have been so featured in the modern era of SpecGram. The first of course, was Lucy Lloyd, Lady Llinguist.

Our editorial team has invested considerable effort in pulling together several binders full of women, all qualified to be cover candidates, and we will seek to have a more balanced gender ratio for as long as the binders hold out. That said, readers of SpecGram are encouraged to nominate linguists and other important figures in the history of the study of languagemale or femalefor inclusion on a future cover.

* By the way, those in Prof. Chornsky’s Ling 101 class need to provide a compositional semantic analysis of “humming along swimmingly” by Monday, Feb. 10, to get the extra credit. Double extra credit if the analysis is either stratificational or in pre-proto-Afro-Hittite, but not both.

Definitely not both.
