You can’t give up on academia just yet..
The years go by, and you get a steady gig, where you hold out as the endlessly visiting assistant/associate lecturer/instructor, waiting for someone to retire or die so you can have a chance at the tenure track. You are well liked by the faculty, and the students just adore you. Your personal life has settled down enough that you have a happy home and your friends actually expect you to still be around next year (which you now internally define as the period from September to June).
Finally, old Professor Johnson kicks the bucket, and you, the favorite among staff and students, get the nod. Welcome to the faculty, Professor!
